 I just participated, via Skype, in the Starobelsk Library's grand celebration of getting computers from the Bibliomist project. It was wonderful to see the library filled with friends and people from the community. A special day. |

 Looking back on the past twelve months, I am thrilled by the results of IREX’ work and excited to consider the prospects for the coming year. In 2012, with our generous donors’ support, it was possible to benefit more people than ever before. Over half a million lives have been touched this last year because an IREX’er -- in the U.S. and around the world -- was there to provide support. In doing so, we’ve had the privilege to work with more than 400 local partners in 125 countries. |

 On December 10th, youth involved in the Youth Civic Engagement and Dialogue Program (YCED) in Romania commemorated International Human Rights Day by creating posters depicting what human rights symbolize for them. The YCED program builds upon the International Declaration of Human Rights by supporting youth to become active citizens who mobilize their peers to build tolerance across ethnic divisions. |

 Across the globe, people with disabilities face an array of societal barriers that put them at a severe disadvantage. In the United States people with disabilities are four times as likely to be a victim of violence. These disadvantages – which are unfortunately exacerbated in low-income countries – pose as serious obstacles to a country’s development and its observance of civic and human rights. Fortunately, community leaders like Padam Pariyar from Nepal are working to change this reality. |
