The contest seeks for photographs of individuals and scenes representing the IREX tagline, “Make a Better World” around the world in one or more of IREX’s seven focus areas: Civil Society, Conflict Resolution, Education, Gender, Media, Technology for Development, and Youth. |

In a rare moment, far from classrooms and school buildings, 112 teachers and administrators from 32 states came together to discuss what it means for students in the United States to be globally competent. The conclusion: global education spans disciplines, demonstrates 21st century student competence, and is a necessary aspect of U.S. core curricula. “I used to think about global education in a passive way,” an administrator noted following the Symposium, “but now I realize that we need to actively engage our students in international thought.” |

Mytheli Sreenivas, Associate Professor of History and Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies at Ohio State University, and Archana Mankotia, ILEP alumna and social studies teacher in India, will share with us their insights and perspectives on population growth in India. |

The 2010 earthquake in Haiti took the lives of thousands and devastated the health and education systems of heavily populated areas throughout the country. Amidst the chaos and destruction, Haitians provided training and safe spaces for students to help restore structure and develop skills to respond to potential future disasters. Jovenel Thomas, an English teacher from Cap-Haitien, has been a champion for these much-needed efforts. |

Celestin Munyandekwe is a secondary school teacher in Rwanda and a 2011 fellow of the Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program. His vision for a more peaceful and productive society is helping to shape a generation of tolerant minds in rural Rwanda. A dear friend of IREX and distinguished alumna of the International Leaders in Education Program (ILEP), Ms. Medarka “Med” Muarip passed away on August 2, 2011. One of the many outstanding Filipino teachers to participate in the ILEP program, Medarka traveled to the United States in January 2010 for a five-month professional development program for international teachers. |
