IREX’s latest Africa Media Sustainability Index (MSI) found that traditional media remain the preferred source of news. Many benefits presented by online media have yet to reach most citizens in the 42 sub-Saharan African countries analyzed. Nonetheless, transition to online and mobile format media appears inevitable. |

In May, higher education leaders from six regions came together to promote dialogue and reform. A series of workshops held in Erbil through the Iraq University Linkages Program welcomed nearly 40 administrators from seven universities and several government institutions to discuss university administration. The workshops focused on topics including quality assurance, institutional relations and advancement, and strategic planning. These topics were chosen because they are common barriers, identified by the administrators, that hinder Iraq’s once world-class universities from resuming their role as engines of growth in the region. |

In the development world, goals often seem far away, over the horizon at least. Goals frequently seem to recede as we approach and morph into new forms. One reason, of course, is that time and circumstances change goals. Another is that actually achieving a goal requires an extraordinary commitment - to do whatever is necessary to achieve the aim. |

Al Abdullah was recognized for his leadership in promoting justice and accountability for Syria. |

IREX is pleased to launch a new video showcasing the Syrian Justice and Accountability Center (SJAC). The documentary titled “Justice for Syria” details the story of Mohammad Al Abdallah, a Syrian human rights and democracy activist, who is working to document human rights abuses in Syria. Through the creation of the SJAC, and the support of IREX, Al Abdallah works to capture the events in Syria to eventually achieve justice for victims of human rights abuses. |

Our second annual photo contest is now closed. Last year, we received more than 2,400 photos from across the globe that embodied our vision to “make a better world.” This year we are building on that theme by asking to participants to submit images that reflect the lives and locations of our work. The three prize categories are: 1) Technology, information and participation 2) Improving communities and 3) Education and employment. |
