In preparation for Romania’s parliamentary elections, community members at two pilot site libraries in Salaj County came together to learn about Romania’s new national voting system and discuss the upcoming elections. IREX helped coordinate these meetings with librarians at the Cehu Silvaniei and Bobota public libraries, introducing new library services to the communities and demonstrating the role of modern libraries in serving their communities. |

After completing ICT training for government officials in January, Senior Officer of Zaporizhya, Ukraine’s Family Issues and Adoption Department Irina Voloshko is using new skills to streamline her workplace. Earlier, the city administration asked staff at the IREX-implemented Internet Access and Training Program (IATP) to train eight government officials as part of its e-Government initiative in Ukraine. |

Public health expert Pavlo Kovtoniuk from Zhytomyr, Ukraine was recognized for his outstanding collaborative blog on public health issues. The blog, which Kovtoniuk created and manages, was rated the sixth out of 30 nominees for “Best Professional Blog” at the Best Ukrainian Blog Contest 2008 in October. An active user and volunteer at his local IREX-managed internet center since the facility’s opening, Kovtoniuk created the resource to share his and others’ views on the healthcare system in Ukraine, its future development, and ways to improve it. |

Thanks in part to IREX technical training, disabled citizens from Turkmenabat, Turkmenistan are becoming entrepreneurs empowered to obtain the assistance they need. In recent months, Samuil Lavskiy, a leader of the disabled community in Turkmenabat, cooperated with local entrepreneurs to open several businesses. These enterprises have had a positive impact on the local community and are currently employing 18 people with disabilities. |

During the recent military conflict between Georgia and Russia, hundreds of Georgian nationals became isolated from the rest of the world and were unable to contact their family members and friends when national and mobile telephone services failed. IREX-administered computer centers throughout the country responded, becoming popular and unique venues for citizens to access information about the war online and find out about the fate of their families. |

Until recently, visually impaired visitors to a local library in Iasi, Romania had to hire someone to read aloud for them at selected hours. Thanks to IREX and the Association for the Visually Impaired, a new public access computer center enables the community to scan documents and books and use special software to listen to the text as it is read aloud. |
