Yesterday, USAID launched their first-ever policy for Youth in Development. The policy provides a framework to address youth systematically in line with proven best practices to support, protect, prepare, and engage youth to help them to achieve the best future for themselves and their communities and nations. The policy also provides guidance for integrating youth in core agency initiatives, bringing youth to the forefront of USAID’s work across all sectors. |

To paraphrase Joni Mitchell, we’ve looked at giving from both sides now. IREX gives as part of our programming, providing over $11 million dollars in grants this year alone to local institutions around the world and awarding nearly 1,000 fellowships annually to both American and international participants. In addition, each year IREX staff chooses a US-based nonprofit to receive the proceeds from our holiday charity drive, the total amount of which IREX matches. As one of the 400 partner organizations, IREX looks forward to participating in the first #GivingTuesday on November 27. This week IREX and USAID will hold a closeout conference for the Serbia Media Assistance Program in Belgrade. Watch the livestream here Thursday, November 1 from 4:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. EST and Friday, November 2 from 4:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. EST. Topics covered will include contemporary media law, media strategy and its implementation, media freedom, investigative journalism, social media for journalists, media market and trends, media literacy, and preconditions and critical issues for media development in Serbia.

IREX is pleased to announce the recipients of the Fall 2012 TEA/ILEP Alumni Small Grants competition. IREX, in conjunction with an independent selection committee and the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, selected 10 alumni of the Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program (TEA) and 6 alumni of the International Leaders in Education Program (ILEP) to receive funding to support their original small grant project ideas. |

Youth from Romania and Moldova gave voice to their personal stories of change in a participatory evaluation of the Youth Civic Engagement and Dialogue program. Using the Most Significant Change technique, more than 80 youth participated in an evaluation in which they gathered stories of change from each other and shared their recommendations for the future of the project. |

Teacher Heather Riffel is playing an instrumental role in the development of Colorado’s youth workforce. Through her work as an agriculture teacher at Boulder’s Career and Technical School (CTEC), Heather empowers students with the skills they need to contribute productively to the$20 billion dollar agricultural industry in Colorado. It was in Indonesia, however, where she found ways to strengthen the link between her work and the industry. |

Even after years of experience working on youth development projects in his native Malawi, Rex Mlotha wanted to expand his horizons. His self-proclaimed “passion for positive change” led him to travel halfway across the globe—almost 10,000 miles—to Seattle, Washington. Mlotha credits this passion and experience for motivating him to apply to the Community Solutions Program. |

IREX is pleased to join the new movement to create an annual day of giving. Giving Tuesday “is a national campaign to create a national day of giving at the start of the holiday season. It celebrates and encourages charitable activities that support nonprofit organizations.” This year, following Black Friday and Cyber Monday, on Tuesday November 27, 2012 hundreds of organizations, thousands of communities and individuals will focus on acts of giving. |

In August, 50 young people participated in a Sports Camp in Issyk-Kul, Kyrgyzstan with the goals of promoting tolerance, reducing conflict, and enhancing girls' roles in sports as part of the State Department-funded Kyrgyzstan Innovations in Coaching Kids (KICK) program. |

“There is wide gap between communities and NGOs. I feel Serve 4 Change can fill this gap and act as a bridge between communities and organizations, which will later empower people,” says Salamat. His youth-led organization, Serve 4 Change, is directly enhancing local capacity and giving voice to the true needs of communities in rural Gilgit-Baltistan. “I believe our issues are not big, but they are significant.” |
