IREX congratulates the winners of the Fall 2012 Global UGRAD-Pakistan program video competition, “A Day in the Life of a Global UGRAD-Pakistan Fellow.” Amreek, studying at Roanoke College; Anum, studying at Bennett College; and Jasmeen, studying at Juniata College, won for their outstanding videos showcasing their experiences at a U.S. college or university and what they have learned about American culture and values.

IREX is joining thousands of organizations, communities, and individuals for #GivingTuesday. The first national day of giving at the start of the holiday season, #GivingTuesday celebrates and encourages charitable activities that support nonprofit organizations. 

In appreciation of the assistance provided to one of our own families this year, IREX staff is pleased to announce the selection of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Washington, DC (RMHC) as the recipients of our annual staff silent auction proceeds with matching funds donated by IREX.

According to Human Rights Watch, Iraq remains one of the most dangerous countries to work as a journalist. It is also a hazardous place for many women, with increasingly high rates of gender-based violence including domestic violence, so-called "honor killings," and human trafficking. In response to this pressing need, IREX’s Women, Justice, and Media in Iraq (WJMI) program is bringing media professionals, women’s rights advocates, and others together to raise awareness of women’s rights across the country.

16 Days Against Gender Violence

At this year's 16 Days Against Gender Violence kicks off on November 25, we're reminded of how complex and painful the issue of gender-based violence (GBV) is. Human trafficking, domestic violence, child marriage, anti-LGBT violence—GBV affects women, men, and children in every country and at every socioeconomic level.

KICK emphasizes sports as a medium for conflict management and promoting mutual understanding. Through the program, coaches and youth from different regions and ethnic and religious backgrounds in Kyrgyzstan engage in conversations about gender and sports and come to acknowledge that many of the benefits for boys are just as relevant for girls.  In addition, they identified the impact that increased physical ability and confidence can have in reducing girls’ vulnerability against attack and abuse from a stranger or a loved one.

Mansur Ganiev has learned that to strengthen the legal system in Tajikistan, he must work for those most underserved to understand their legal rights. An alumnus of the Legal Education and Development Short-Term English Program (LEAD STEP), Ganiev returned to his home country a few months ago and wasted no time in implementing change to strengthen the criminal justice system and the rule of law.

Youth Leadership for Peace Theater Troupe at Jashtar Camp 2012

Recently, the Youth Leadership for Peace (YLP) Theater Troupe brought national attention to youth-led peacebuilding efforts in Kyrgyzstan with a forum theater performance in Bishkek. Performing for an audience of youth and adults at the annual Jashtar Camp youth conference, the Theater Troupe created dialogue around issues of rural unemployment and youth alcohol abuse while also showcasing the leadership role that youth are playing in conflict prevention.
