The teenage years are rocky for most people, male or female, with self-esteem decreasing for both sexes after elementary school. However, the drop is more dramatic for girls, and in a male-dominated society, a lack of strong female role models and opportunities for women can exacerbate the problem.

Somali media – mirroring Somali society – has traditionally been male-dominated. The Puntland Women in Media Association (PWMA), based in Bosaso, works to empower female journalists, combat negative traditional stereotypes and to bring attention to women’s rights and concerns. PWMA also operates a school for female journalists. Last year, in conjunction with the We are Women Activists (WAWA) network, PMWA sponsored a peace poem competition in Bosaso.

Gender issues are receiving more attention on television in the Middle East, thanks to additional funding provided to the IREX-administered, US State Department-funded Middle East and North Africa Media Development Initiatives Alliance (MENA MEDIA) program to expand its TV production grants. The new and groundbreaking programming is tackling sensitive topics such as sex workers, female virginity, and suicide.

On November 20, IREX celebrated its 40th anniversary with a special event at the Library of Congress. Ambassador William Burns and Senator Richard Lugar each gave addresses before policymakers, partners, funders, friends, and IREX staff.

 UNICEF recently selected the Girls World Communication Center (GWCC), an IREX partner, as its contractor to produce a national Newsletter on Girls Education in Yemen. The award came after UNICEF’s decision to extend the 2007 Newsletter program, highlighting GWCC’s high esteem as a women’s rights organization and effective program implementer.

For years teachers and parents of a kindergarten in Comrat, the capital of Moldova’s Gagauzian Autonomous Territory, have been searching for positive outlets to channel their students’ energy. Ana Panaitova, the kindergarten’s director, has led an effort that came with an ideal solution: a gymnasium. And an unused boiler room in the basement of the building provided the ideal venue.
