An hour and a half scenic drive through the mountains from Skopje, Macedonia, is situated beautiful Prilep, a town of about 65,000 people. I travelled there to interview Nesime Salioska, the founder of the NGO ‘Roma SOS...’ Her vision and that of Roma SOS “is to create opportunities for the Romani community to become equal citizens with equal rights and opportunities in society”.

IREX f.y.i. center training

Sheki, a city of 63,000 two hundred miles north of Baku in the Caucasus mountains, hosts one of IREX’s f.y.i. Community Information Centers that provides provides local residents with IT skills, citizen journalism training, and access to the Internet. Seven young women who took advantage of the center’s trainings this past autumn used the skills they developed to land jobs.

Zhanara is from Kant, and is currently a freshman at the National University of Kyrgyzstan, pursuing a degree in Economics. Before TAG, Zhanara used the internet rarely. Now she uses it every day and says that without it she feels like she is cut off from the rest of the world. “Without internet, I am deaf and blind,” she says.

Volunteers at Sawt al Karak

When the Jordan Media Strengthening Program (JMSP) launched, in 2006, there was one single, albeit vibrant, community radio station in Jordan. Today, there are five, producing and broadcasting a variety of original formats geared toward local audiences. With JMSP’s assistance, the five stations have been cooperating on a news syndicate project and are currently establishing an independent federation of community radio broadcasters.

Sixteen-year-old Gaukhar Isabekova from Abai School never volunteered before the Tech Age Teens (TAT) program came to her school. Now she can’t imagine life without her visits to the Ak Bota orphanage, where she helps children with disabilities.
