TV Production Fund Highlights Gender Issues in Middle East May 1, 2009 Gender issues are receiving more attention on television in the Middle East, thanks to additional funding provided to the IREX-administered, US State Department-funded Middle East and North Africa Media Development Initiatives Alliance (MENA MEDIA) program to expand its TV production grants. The new and groundbreaking programming is tackling sensitive topics such as sex workers, female virginity, and suicide.	Glamour Magazine Recognizes IREX Partner in Yemen for Work in Women’s Empowerment January 25, 2009 In November, the Girls World Communication Center (GWCC), IREX and IREX Europe’s local partner for its Young Women’s Leadership Program (YWLP), was the single recipient of Glamour’s 2008 Women of the Year Fund. GWCC was selected for this prestigious award after Nujood Ali and Shada Nasser of Yemen were recognized as Glamour’s 2008 Women of the Year. Last spring, 10-year-old Nujood Ali sought the guidance of lawyer Shada Nasser to divorce an abusive husband 20 years her senior. Nujood has since returned to her home with dreams of becoming a lawyer and helping others in her country.
Yemeni Women’s Leadership Center Wins UNICEF Funding and National Recognition May 22, 2008 UNICEF recently selected the Girls World Communication Center (GWCC), an IREX partner, as its contractor to produce a national Newsletter on Girls Education in Yemen. The award came after UNICEF’s decision to extend the 2007 Newsletter program, highlighting GWCC’s high esteem as a women’s rights organization and effective program implementer. Emerging Middle Eastern Media Leaders Complete US Fellowships February 5, 2008 Media managers from the Arab world successfully completed IREX’s six-week MENA MEDIA Emerging Leaders Fellowship, a program funded by the US Department of State Middle East Partnership Initiative. Participants in the program’s second year included editors, executive directors, and managers from media outlets and businesses representing several countries in the Arab world, including Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, West Bank/Gaza, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. Eighteen Arab Media Managers to be selected for a six-week fellowship in the United States March 26, 2007 Arab media managers and supervisors will have a unique opportunity this fall to enhance their leadership skills and find innovative solutions to the challenges they face in media management through a comprehensive six-week fellowship that will include intense training at the prestigious Northwestern University Media Management Center in the Chicago suburb of Evanston, Illinois and on-site placements at US media outlets across the country.	MENA MEDIA Emerging Leaders Fellowship: Twelve mid-career Arab media professionals to win a three-month fellowship in the United States April 11, 2006 Arab journalists and editors will have a unique opportunity this fall to improve their media management skills through a comprehensive three-month fellowship that will include academic training with the prestigious Northwestern University in Chicago and on-site assignments at American media companies.
MENA MEDIA TV Production Fund: Small Grants Available to Arab TV Companies to Produce Local Content March 16, 2006 Independent Arab television news producers will be able to obtain financial support for their research and productions this year.
