Gender issues are receiving more attention on television in the Middle East, thanks to additional funding provided to the IREX-administered, US State Department-funded Middle East and North Africa Media Development Initiatives Alliance (MENA MEDIA) program to expand its TV production grants. The new and groundbreaking programming is tackling sensitive topics such as sex workers, female virginity, and suicide. |

In November, the Girls World Communication Center (GWCC), IREX and IREX Europe’s local partner for its Young Women’s Leadership Program (YWLP), was the single recipient of Glamour’s 2008 Women of the Year Fund. GWCC was selected for this prestigious award after Nujood Ali and Shada Nasser of Yemen were recognized as Glamour’s 2008 Women of the Year. Last spring, 10-year-old Nujood Ali sought the guidance of lawyer Shada Nasser to divorce an abusive husband 20 years her senior. Nujood has since returned to her home with dreams of becoming a lawyer and helping others in her country. |

UNICEF recently selected the Girls World Communication Center (GWCC), an IREX partner, as its contractor to produce a national Newsletter on Girls Education in Yemen. The award came after UNICEF’s decision to extend the 2007 Newsletter program, highlighting GWCC’s high esteem as a women’s rights organization and effective program implementer. |

Media managers from the Arab world successfully completed IREX’s six-week MENA MEDIA Emerging Leaders Fellowship, a program funded by the US Department of State Middle East Partnership Initiative. Participants in the program’s second year included editors, executive directors, and managers from media outlets and businesses representing several countries in the Arab world, including Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, West Bank/Gaza, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. |
