It’s not easy to broadcast a film festival over radio airwaves, but that’s just what IREX partner City Radio did for the open-air film festival in Nis, Serbia. City Radio, with the help of IREX Serbia, provided a seven-hour remote broadcast of the festival’s opening ceremony and first day, including live interviews with actors and other participants by using 3G mobile systems to broadcast the event. |

Faced with some of the region’s highest licensing fees, Serbia’s Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM) recently successfully lobbied the country’s Republic Broadcasting Agency (RBA) to lower its charges based on a sliding scale. The lobbying efforts were augmented with help from IREX and USAID. |

Despite efforts to earn more revenue through their websites, many radio stations in Serbia face serious challenges from clients who are not enthusiastic about advertising on new media platforms. One key obstacle is the notion of advertising on a radio station’s website as a free extension of traditional radio advertising, rather than a dynamic and important way to capture more of an audience’s attention. |

Professionalism and the ability to identify and develop relevant stories can thoroughly inform populations in a way that accurately presents their often volatile communities and can serve to reduce tensions and combat calls to violence. Kosovo today demonstrates the need for this locally driven, professional reporting. |
