 Seven years ago, Anastasiya Buchok of Uzbekistan took the first step to learn about technology and participated in IREX’s Tech Age Girls (TAG) program. Today, thanks to that initial spark, she has a successful career working for a major software company. While not all TAG alumni go into IT careers, all of them gain better skills and access to technology for everyday use at school and work. This project helps to close a “gender digital divide” that is sometimes attributed to girls’ reports of less positive attitudes and self-efficacy toward ICT than boys. |

 What is a modern library? What role can young librarians from around Eastern Europe play to promote modern services and approaches in their libraries and beyond? At the International Young Librarians Summer Academy in Latvia this summer, nearly 45 young librarians from the European Global Libraries countries convened to share ideas, learn new technologies, and develop essential skills as advocates, teachers, and community leaders. They were joined by librarians from Botswana, Columbia, and Vietnam. |

 Human trafficking, drug trade, police reform, and corporate graft were among the diverse topics debated and discussed by ten up-and-coming scholars at the 2012 IREX/WWC Regional Policy Symposium, "Transnational Crime and Corruption in Eastern Europe and Eurasia." Transnational criminal networks, and the domestic corruption that feeds them, represent one of the major foreign policy challenges facing the United States today. |

 Even in this day and age, in a country as developed as Romania, misinformation about HIV/AIDS continues to exist in the rural areas. A group of Roma and non-Roma youth took it upon themselves to shed light on the issue for their peers. Roma and non-Roma youth, aged 14-18, organized a training on the social and biological aspects of the disease for other youth in their school in a new series of workshops on community issues. |

 The 2012 edition of IREX’s Media Sustainability Index (MSI) for Europe and Eurasia measures the struggles and triumphs of the media sector in 21 transitioning countries from Croatia to Kazakhstan. Evidence from local media experts shows overall stability in the media sector. Increasing use of digital and social media gives hope for expanding freedom of expression. However, reported backsliding in several countries, partly due to the increased political control of media, concerns the experts. |

 It is not often that youth in Moldova have the opportunity to meet with the mayor, let alone solicit financial support from local officials. However, when the youth of the Theoretic High School Mihai Eminescu met with the mayor of Hincesti last month, he was so impressed with their initiative that he allocated city funds towards their project. The initiative, called “In a Healthy Body, a Healthy Mind,” will implement athletic activities between Roma and non-Roma youth, with the goal of promoting tolerance among other youth. |

 As Eastern Romania is currently digging out of the snow, youth in Ivesti are keeping warm and busy building a center at their school in which students can work across ethnic lines to promote intercultural tolerance between Roma and non-Roma students. |
