 Yesterday, USAID launched their first-ever policy for Youth in Development. The policy provides a framework to address youth systematically in line with proven best practices to support, protect, prepare, and engage youth to help them to achieve the best future for themselves and their communities and nations. The policy also provides guidance for integrating youth in core agency initiatives, bringing youth to the forefront of USAID’s work across all sectors. |

 Even after years of experience working on youth development projects in his native Malawi, Rex Mlotha wanted to expand his horizons. His self-proclaimed “passion for positive change” led him to travel halfway across the globe—almost 10,000 miles—to Seattle, Washington. Mlotha credits this passion and experience for motivating him to apply to the Community Solutions Program. |

She is a fierce advocate for girls’ safety and empowerment. |

 My trip to Tobago was like any journey to a lush tropical paradise - a long plane ride to another planet. First it is the hot moist air that clamps around your whole being - then it is the brilliant green-blue world that fills your vision - and then the adventure begins. I came to reconnect with Ms. Essie Parks, the Community Solutions leader that spent four months with my organization, Eco-Cycle Inc., in Boulder, Colorado to learn how to improve the waste management system on her home island of Tobago in the Caribbean. |

 There is much truth to the notion that genuine, effective development solutions come from within developing countries. The proof is evident in the 58 leaders from 28 countries of this year’s Community Solutions Program. Meet Moses Sanga, of Uganda, recently featured in a New York Times article about his organic fuel venture, Eco-Fuel Africa. Sanga, once an accountant, is now an innovator in alternative cooking fuels. |

 The lady at the Khan-Uul District Citizen’s Hall, a “Senior Specialist Citizen’s Representative,” was supposed to be showing us around the building. We had an appointment all set up and we were on time. She, however, was blabbing with some locals while we cooled our heels on hard chairs in the Hall for maybe half an hour. I was annoyed -- until I understood what was really happening -- but I am getting way ahead of the story. |

 At the start of the Rio+20 Summit, an IREX alumnus offers his views of the Summit and realities for green economic growth in Egypt. Mostafa Hussein is co-founder of SOLAR C3ITIES and an advocate for affordable, sustainable energy alternatives in Cairo. He is an alumnus of the 2011 Community Solutions Program. During his four month fellowship in the US, Hussein worked at the Institute for Market Transformation, where he learned about alternative energy cooperative models and market solutions for creating consumer demand for sustainable energy alternatives. |
