After more than forty years of implementing international education programs, IREX has witnessed the deep, transformational effects of global exchange on individuals, communities, and nations. Thousands of students, professionals, teachers from around the world have experienced the U.S. through educational opportunities and returned home to improve their communities and strengthen ties between the U.S. and their countries. IREX celebrates International Education Week with great pleasure and congratulates the students and alumni who are working tirelessly to build bridges across cultures.

 “There is wide gap between communities and NGOs. I feel Serve 4 Change can fill this gap and act as a bridge between communities and organizations, which will later empower people,” says Salamat. His youth-led organization, Serve 4 Change, is directly enhancing local capacity and giving voice to the true needs of communities in rural Gilgit-Baltistan. “I believe our issues are not big, but they are significant.”

Project Smile participants

On a cold winter morning, 300 female students at a low-income school in Rawalpindi gathered in the school courtyard for an unexpected surprise. Volunteers from the nearby Fatima Jinnah Women University had brought them a mountain of books, gifts and educational prizes they had gathered as part of an ambitious book drive that received donations from over 300 university students.

Each year hundreds of youth, teachers, students, and professionals from around the Muslim world participate in IREX training programs in the U.S. Observing Ramadan in the U.S. can be both a challenge and an opportunity for many of these participants. In honor of Eid, we asked current and past students of the Global UGRAD-Pakistan program about their experiences of Ramadan in the U.S.

Ann Stock, Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs, welcomed more than 150 international youth leaders to the U.S. to begin academic and cultural programs at more than 80 universities and colleges across the U.S.country as part of the Global UGRAD-Pakistan and Global UGRAD in Eurasia and Central Asia programs. Ms. Stock reminded the students that they are citizen ambassadors for their countries, who “will leave a remarkable impact” on their host communities, building relationships “that can and should last.”

Students at Minnesota State University-Moorhead got an unexpected ‘Journey to Pakistan’ this past semester, thanks to a young Pakistani woman, Zahra, who found her public voice after coming to the U.S. Though students had never before enjoyed a program hosted by an international student, Zahra quickly gained followers through what became a popular campus radio show.

Pakistani Students Experience Diversity of United States

In honor of World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, IREX is pleased to share this video interview with two students from Pakistan.

During the Spring 2012 semester, Uzair and Komal studied at American University in Washington, DC as part of the Global UGRAD-Pakistan program. Uzair and Komal took classes on campus in business administration and American studies, and integrated with their host community through cultural activities, community service, and giving presentations about Pakistan.

IREX is pleased to announce the winners of the Spring 2012 Cultural Passport to America competition for the Global UGRAD-Pakistan program. Maria (Shawnee State University), Nadir (Dillard University), Yasir (Eastern Michigan University), and Tayyab (Wabash College) were selected as exemplary cultural ambassadors because of their participation in a diverse array of cultural events and their regular reflections through blog posts sharing their experiences.
