To commemorate International Rural Women's Day, IREX would like to present this story about one woman's work to support her family. IRWD is a day to honor contributions of rural women to rural development, improving food security and eradicating rural poverty.

A caring mother of young children, and the wife of a local railway worker, Arman Tuygunbekova lives in a small village in Northern Kazakhstan. In this region unemployment is a constant threat, child development centers and schools are sparse and often ill equipped, and local women, like Arman, have little knowledge or access to information about proper nutrition for themselves and their families.

BOTA representatives presented the government with the nuts and bolts of its poverty reduction toolbox: the Conditional Cash Transfer Program, Tuition Assistance Program, and Social Service Program.

While university scholarships provided to Kazakhstan’s disadvantaged youth will certainly help them towards brighter futures, there is still an important component necessary for becoming an empowered and successful individual. That piece is the development of the life skills necessary in order to “effectively improve the economic and social situations of their families, communities, and nation."

The cotton tree, or Baiterek, was known as “the tree of life” by the ancient Turks. Itwas seen as a bridge between heaven and earth. Forever strong, this tree now symbolizes Kazakhstan for many; its roots representing the nation’s history and its branches the future. Baiterek is also a public association in Uralsk that is working to build a prosperous future for youth with disabilities.
