An inspiring group of frontline journalists and activists worldwide are launching new digital journalism tools, supplanting state media, and tackling taboo topics in the face of great opposition. Now, you can find close to 100 global leaders in advancing press freedom through the new World Press Freedom Fellows web feature on irex.org.

IREX Launches Regional Journalist Security Network

At a time when journalists around the world face increasing threats of violence, intimidation, and internet surveillance, IREX is launching a new program to provide training and support in physical and digital security to journalists and newsrooms. At a ceremony featuring US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Jane Zimmerman, journalists from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras, and the Rector of the University of Central America (UCA), IREX and the University of Central America (UCA) signed a memorandum of understanding officially launching the first of three planned centers of the Regional Journalist Security Network, to be located at the University of Central America.

Alberto Vaquina, Prime Minister of Mozambique, visited IREX's office there.

The Prime Minister of Mozambique, Alberto Vaquina, visited IREX’s Maputo office last week as part of a series of working visits to media organizations. During the visit, the Prime Minister learned about the Media Strengthening Program in Mozambique and also toured the facilities and media lab. While there, he heard about ongoing activities in the areas of capacity building, media business management, journalism education, community radio, and advocacy.

One radio station manager's perception of gender. Of the more than 50 community

The images told a story, one of confusion, misunderstanding and the stark reality that confronts the men in this room on a daily basis. It’s a reality that poses a challenge for IREX and its partners. At issue: mainstreaming gender in community radio programs and policies. The 19 men here were in the central Liberian city of Gbarnga for a CSML-run gender awareness training for community radio managers and news directors. They had been asked to draw images of their understanding of gender, and their drawings spoke volumes.

Recently, journalists at Liberia Women Democracy Radio (LWDR) challenged citizens in R.C. Lawson Community, a small village on the outskirts of Monrovia, to take a stand against sexual exploitation through interactive theatre. IREX’s Civil Society and Media Leadership program is committed to strengthening the capacity of Liberian’s civil society and media outlets, including community radio stations.  Through this training and subsequent community and radio presentations, citizens are activated not as bystanders, but as agents of change in their communities.

Camera as Voice

In 2011, IREX implemented "Camera as Voice" training with the goal of empowering Azerbaijani women to express themselves through film making. More than 100 girls from across 10 regions in Azerbaijan attended and began engaging in conversations surrounding critical issues, through documentary film making. 

Watch how 14-year-old Aytan, participant in the 'Camera as Voice' training is now following her dream of becoming a film maker and breaking down barriers.

Whether the villagers want to prepare for an exam, learn more about childcare, health issues, farming or just to knit a sweater, all this and more is available when they sit down at the Internet kiosk in Fatalikand’s post office. They have free access to Internet thanks to IREX Azerbaijan’s Electronic Village project. They are using a purpose-built computer kiosk installed at the local post office last October. The manager of the post office is trained to help visitors browse the Internet and encourage them to explore the world online.
