 In Morocco, disability rights are not the highest priority issues for the government, but a local NGO, the Regional Union for Disability Associations, is changing that with the support of IREX and its partner, the World Institute for Disabilities (WID). Regional Union recently won four government grants to support people with disabilities. The largest of these grants could help build hundreds of RoughRider wheelchairs that are well-suited for Morocco’s varied terrain. |

 A recent Pew Research poll showed that the three budget accounts that Americans most wanted to cut were foreign assistance, the State Department and unemployment benefits. This may be based in part on the wide misperception and overestimation of the overall amount of foreign aid in the US budget. (It is less than 1%.) |

 The Novateca program is giving many Moldovans free access to computers and the Internet. Organizers recently inaugurated six regional training centers throughout Moldova where librarians are learning to help patrons make use of the technology. By the end of 2013 more than 350,000 will benefit from free public access to the Internet. |

 For World Water Day and its 2013 theme, Water Cooperation, it is important to recognize individuals like Rodrigo Ponce who are working towards bridging the societal gaps exacerbating the water conflict in Peru. An environmental activist and 2012 Community Solutions Program (CSP) Leader, Ponce works closely with local individuals and groups in and around the Amazonian city of Tarapoto. |

 Librarians in Ukraine are promoting the ideals of a “modern library” and helping to change perspectives about their role in the community. A recent national survey of more than 2,500 citizens revealed that, more and more, think of the library as a place to use computers and receive technical training. |

In Bac Giang, Vietnam, Ngan is teaching her school’s journalism club how to use digital storytelling tools to better report news relevant to her fellow students. |

 Recently, journalists at Liberia Women Democracy Radio (LWDR) challenged citizens in R.C. Lawson Community, a small village on the outskirts of Monrovia, to take a stand against sexual exploitation through interactive theatre. IREX’s Civil Society and Media Leadership program is committed to strengthening the capacity of Liberian’s civil society and media outlets, including community radio stations. Through this training and subsequent community and radio presentations, citizens are activated not as bystanders, but as agents of change in their communities. |
