Students learn to build a culture of peace in Colombia.

In a school where fighting, bullying, theft and absenteeism were the everyday norm, one teacher had the vision to help change the status quo. Guillermo Lopez Ossa knew he could empower the 650 students at Deogracias Cardona School in Risaralda, Colombia to transform their harmful classroom dynamics, despite chaos there and in the community. In short time, he had decreased violent incidents by 25 percent at Deogracias, and looked to expand to schools around the region.

Teachers from Turkey arrive in U.S. to begin training.

A cohort of 19 early career English teachers from Turkey will continue to refine their teaching practice through an intensive professional development program at the University of North Dakota with the Teaching, Excellence, and Achievement Program (TEA) Program. The teachers arrived in the U.S. last week to begin their  training at a Welcome Program in Washington, D.C., where they participated in training sessions on Cross-Cultural Communication and the U.S. Education System. In addition, the teachers traveled in small groups to visit schools and non-profit organizations working with English language learners in the greater D.C. area.

Washington, DC – Today IREX received a new grant from the United States Institute of Peace, which will expand its peacebuilding activities in Kyrgyzstan. With this funding, IREX will train and support youth and adults to create peer mediation programs in schools and establish and support a multi-ethnic youth theater performance troupe.

Unlikely allies, Hudak Hendrix and Jose Douglas Martinez share a passion for globalizing education to broaden the horizons of students and educators in El Salvador and the U.S. In 2010, Hendrix, as part of the International Leaders in Education Program (ILEP), traveled to Indonesia for two weeks, where he was hosted by a local teacher and learned about the country’s education system. Martinez, as part of the Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program (TEA), studied teaching methodologies at Claremont Graduate University in California in 2011. Both Hendrix and Martinez found their careers and world views altered by these international experiences.

Aid & International Development Forum

IREX will be participating for the first time at the Aid and International Development Forum (AIDF) June 6 -7, 2012. We look forward to interacting with our peer NGO leaders, policy makers and private sector representatives and exploring ways to leverage our global cross-cutting work in civil society, education, media, conflict resolution, gender, technology and youth. Be sure to stop by our table at N19 in Hall D at the Washington Convention Center.

After a semester of intensive professional development at four U.S. universities, class was over for the 63 teachers from around the world who participated in the International Leaders in Education Program (ILEP). As they gathered in Washington, D.C. last week during the final event of the program, it was clear that they were now more than master educators: they had become teacher-leaders, ready to share their expertise with hundreds of colleagues across the world.

Much environmental research starts with a problem, such as species extinction, global warming, or erosion. In honor of Earth Day, IREX is pleased share a story of two physics teachers from India and a graduate student from Alabama focused on a solution. Rahul Chatterjee and Bishakha Banerjee, current International Leaders in Education Program (ILEP) participants, are collaborating with Melanie Phillips, a graduate student at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), to research reforestation in Chhattisgarh and Punjab, India using satellite imagery and remote sensing techniques.

When 88 master educators from every region of the world came together last week at a four-day workshop in Washington, D.C., they shared more than the teaching methodologies they had cultivated over the course of the six-week program: they shared a new sense of mutual understanding gained from the partnerships they had forged with schools across America.
