Ukrainian Libraries Are Bridge to E-Governance for Thousands

Finding ways to promote e-governance has become a priority for local governments around the world. Even though a diversity of government e-services are available in Ukraine, some challenges remain about ways to promote the national-scale adoption by citizens. In response, IREX-Bibliomist, the Ministry of Culture, and the National Parliamentary Library of Ukraine launched an e-governance initiative to promote e-governance services with the help of NGOs and libraries.

TechChange’s Lessons from Training Pakistani Students Online

Last month we discovered that our enthusiasm about exchange 2.0 was exceeded only by that of our international exchange students in Pakistan. A select group of forty students, all alumni of the Global UGRAD-Pakistan program, shattered every quantifiable participation record at TechChange for online learning. Read more from guest bloggers Gerard McCarthy and Christopher Neu.

Youth + Technology = Transformation

I have been managing IREX’s Tech Age Girls (TAG) project for several years and the transformation that happens in the participants in the short period of 5-6 month continues to inspire me. TAG is a unique project because it uses technology as a means of developing leadership, sense of volunteerism, and confidence in high school girls.

Hard Work Online Pays Off in Azerbaijan

On behalf of IREX, I am pleased to announce that 22 diligent Azerbaijani students and their mentors won netbooks and flipcameras in a recent national contest for the ‘Best Research Essays Using Internet.' One hundred and sixty nine candidates entered from all over the country, notably Sumgait, Guba, Shirvan, Imishli, Ganja, Gazakh, Sheki, Zagatala, Ismayilli and Mingachevir. Plagiarism was penalised, with positive results.

Libraries: The Sustainable Telecenter

IREX has been working with public access to information / telecenters for more than 15 years. In that time we’ve encountered many of the difficulties. How do the telecenters continue operation after outside funding dries up? How do you embed the telecenter into the community? As our thinking on this topic has evolved over the years, we’ve begun focusing our efforts on the one existing public institution that is owned by the local community and can provide a variety of information services: the public library.

Exploring Social and Knowledge Infrastructure in the Middle East

I recently returned from a brief and productive trip to the Middle East looking at the existing portfolio of programs IREX implements in the region and exploring possibilities for new opportunities.
