International Education Week: An American Student in China

Annie Curran is a senior at Annandale High School and the Editor-in-Chief of its newspaper. This past summer, she and five other Annandale students traveled to Lanzhou, China, to participate in an IREX journalism program with 100 of their Chinese peers.

My high school is extremely diverse, which has afforded me the opportunity to learn about a variety of different cultures. I had never traveled out of the country, which is why I was so excited about this opportunity.

Returning to China: Inspired by Youth Voices

Thirty years ago, I arrived in China as a young American diplomat after the normalization of relations between the two countries. This summer, I returned to China to witness the vast changes that have taken place.

I had the opportunity to attend the expansion ceremony for IREX’s China Student Journalism Program and the second annual journalism camp held in the remote northwestern province of Gansu. Walking into an auditorium filled with Chinese and American youth, I could feel the energy and excitement in the room. Students and their teachers were proud of the newspapers displayed on the walls of this large auditorium. Their eagerness and commitment to serving as voices for their peers and community were inspiring.

I opened up my inbox yesterday to a New York Times article reporting on how students from Shanghai have astonished the international education community with their top performance on the OECD-administered PISA test, which measures educational achievements in industrialized countries.
