IREX is working to make a better world through its efforts to fight human trafficking.

For more than fifteen years IREX has supported efforts to reduce human trafficking through support for civil society organizations that raise awareness and provide alternative employment opportunities, assistance to media to improve reporting on the problem of trafficking, and support for research into trafficking.

As a way of giving back to the community every year, IREX holds a silent auction of gift donations made by staff and IREX service providers during our annual holiday party. The entire proceeds from the auction are donated to a charitable organization in the Washington Metropolitan Area.

This week 50 undergraduate fellows from Pakistan began their semester in the United States through the Global Undergraduate Exchange Program in Pakistan (Global UGRAD-Pakistan).

IREX and the Arab Thought Foundation (ATF) will launch new social entrepreneurship and library programs in 2011. The first program, Masool, aims to create economic opportunities in Saudi Arabia for youth entrepreneurs with a commitment to socially-responsible business.

Muskie alumna Daniela Munca is being honored as the January 2011 State Alumni Member of the Month.  State Alumni Members of the Month are selected for implementing new ideas, exhibiting strong leadership skills, strengthening the alumni community, increasing mutual understanding, and demonstrating a commitment to community service.

Two years on, the BOTA Foundation Project looks back upon many successes.  The Foundation’s three programs  were established and have made significant strides to improve the lives of and invest in the human capital of impoverished families, children, and youth in Kazakhstan.  Today, more than 8,000 of Kazakhstan’s poorest families are receiving monthly cash transfers (CCT); more than 120 NGOs have received grants totaling nearly $2.5 million dollars to provide non-commercial services in education and hea

Maria Sonevytsky was a 2008-2009 Individual Advanced Research Opportunities (IARO) fellow. Her research project was entitled "Civilizing Wilderness: Musical Practices as Political and Economic Resources in Contemporary Ukraine."

Georgian media has experienced some turmoil in recent years.  In March, a Georgian television station’s fake broadcast of a Russian invasion into their country outraged many viewers who saw that as an irresponsible stunt.

IREX welcomes the announcement that the United States will host World Press Freedom Day for the first time in 2011. As a member of the executive committee organizing the events to be held May 1-3, 2011, in Washington, DC, IREX looks forward to recognizing the advocacy and bravery of those worldwide working to advance media freedom in the digital age.
