International Leaders in Education Program (ILEP)

ILEP consists of a semester-long academic program at a U.S. university, including coursework and intensive training in teaching methodologies, lesson planning, teaching strategies for their home environment, teacher leadership, as well as the use of computers for Internet, word processing and as tools for teaching. The semester-long program also includes a field experience at a secondary school to engage participants actively with American teachers and students.

The fellowship provides the following:

• J-1 visa support;
• A pre-departure orientation held in participant’s home country;
• Round-trip airfare to and within the U.S.;
• A Welcome Orientation in Washington, DC;
• Academic program fees;
• Housing (generally shared with other program fellows);
• Accident and sickness medical insurance coverage (does not cover pre-existing conditions);
• Transportation to the U.S. field experience school (if necessary);
• A technology allowance;
• A daily allowance for meals and incidentals during the university academic program;
• A book/professional development allowance;
• A baggage/shipping allowance;
• A Closing Workshop in Washington, DC; and
• The opportunity to apply for alumni small grants.

Eligibility

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Be secondary-level, full-time teachers with five or more years of classroom experience in disciplines including English, English as a Foreign Language, Social Studies, Mathematics, or Science. 

• Be citizens of one of the following countries: Bangladesh, Brazil, Egypt, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Lebanon, Malaysia, Morocco, Philippines, Senegal, Uganda

• Be proficient in written and spoken English with a TOEFL score of 500 or higher

Former participants of ILEP, TEA, Partners in Education (PiE) or the Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program are ineligible to apply. If you have participated in other programs funded by the US government, please talk to the Fulbright Commission/US Embassy in your country about your eligibility.
