Following the terrorist attacks against the United States on September 11, alumni, program participants, and the international public at large express their sympathy for the United States through artwork, e-mail, events, and websites.

IREX, with funding from USAID, provides media coverage of the war crimes tribunal in The Hague, offering a groundbreaking opportunity for collaboration among journalists in the former Yugoslavia. Coverage is later expanded thanks to a grant from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation in 2002.
