In 1980 the Summer Exchange of Language Teachers, funded by the US Information Agency, is suspended due to the US boycott of the Moscow Olympic Games.

Scholars continue to conduct research in Poland despite the enactment of martial law. Many Polish exchange scholars rely on the contacts they made during their stay in the United States to help them publish their work outside of Poland and gain access to scholarly materials.
