Russian writer Alexander Solzhenitsyn is expelled from Russia and charged with treason on the basis of his book Gulag Archipelago, which depicts life in Soviet labor camps, sparking the indignation of scholars worldwide.

IREX begins informal negotiations with the USSR towards the reciprocal establishment of coordinating offices in Moscow and New York.
